Week 5 discussion reply

I feel that all people should have access to basic healthcare. I grew up in a high level of poverty without insurance. I constantly lived in a state of anxiety about something happening or getting sick and not being able receive treatment. People should not have to worry about going bankrupt if they get sick. We all have enough things to worry about. 

I agree with providing healthcare for all, even non-US citizens; Anyone who pays taxes. Healthcare is a fundamental right. No one plans to get sick. It doesn’t matter who you are, what race or culture, you deserve the right to see a doctor when you need to. If everyone was able to receive preventative care, healthcare costs would go down. In my field, most of the causes of kidney failure are preventable. “Diabetes is the most common cause of ESRD. High blood pressure is the second most common cause of ESRD.” (kidneyfund.org) As members of the medical community, we are all painfully aware that these are preventable and if kept in check, could save our government millions of dollars by avoiding dialysis from the start.  

I had a patient who was a police officer who had high blood pressure. He did not know that he was sick, there was nothing else wrong with him; his diagnosis of ESRD was a shock to him. He lost his job because he was too sick to work, then he lost his car, his house and then his insurance and is now on Medicare/Medicaid (you must have secondary insurance with this disease because dialysis costs so much). This man was my age and lost everything he had. That should not happen in our country.   

I feel that everyone should pay for everyone’s healthcare. It should be part of our taxes. As human beings, we should care enough about each other to bear the burden of healthcare. Costs would go down significantly if we could keep people from using the ER as their PCP because they don’t have insurance. People would be more willing to go to the doctor for basic care if they could afford it. I can’t tell you how many patients I have talked to that ended up on dialysis because they couldn’t afford their BP meds or their insulin. Our healthcare system definitelyneeds to be looked over and revamped because we have right now is failing ourcountry.

Effective leaders have a high degree of self-awareness and know how to leverage their strengths in the workplace. Assessments are a valuable tool that professionals can use to learn more about themselves and consider how their temperament and preferences influence their interactions with others.

At some point in your leadership career, you will encounter an ethical or moral dilemma that requires you to take a stand and defend your position.

For this Assignment, you evaluate an issue and consider how you could act as a moral agent or advocate, facilitating the resolution of the issue for a positive outcome.

To prepare:

· Consider the examples of leadership demonstrated in this week’s media presentation and the other Learning Resources.

· To further your self-knowledge, you are required to complete the Kiersey Temperament as indicated in this week’s Learning Resources. Consider your leadership style, including your strengths for leading others and include your results from Kiersey Temperament Sorter to describe potential challenges related to your leadership style.

· Mentally survey your work environment, or one with which you are familiar, and identify a timely issue/dilemma that requires you to perform the leadership role of moral agent or advocate to improve a situation (e.g., speaking or acting on behalf of a vulnerable patient, the need for appropriate staffing, a colleague being treated unfairly).

· What ethical, moral, or legal skills, dispositions, and/or strategies would help you resolve this dilemma? Define the differences between ethical, moral, and legal leadership.

· Finally, consider the values and principles that guide the nursing profession; the organization’s mission, vision, and values; the leadership and management competencies addressed in this course; and your own values and reasons for entering the profession. What motivation do you see for taking a stand on an important issue even when it is difficult to do so?

Write a 4 to 5 page paper (page count does not include title and reference page) that addresses the following:

· Introduce the conceptual frameworks of the ethical constructs of ethics, moral, or legal standards and the purpose of the paper.

· Consider  an ethical, moral, or legal dilemma that you have encountered in your work environment and describe it.

· Analyze the moral, ethical, and legal implications utilized in this situation. Describe your role as a moral agent or advocate for this specific issue.

· Consider your leadership styles identified by your self-assessment and determine if they act as a barrier or facilitation during this dilemma. 

Two nursing students cheated on several assignments.  Although the evidence is irrefutable, both students deny cheating.  Discuss these students in terms of virtue ethics.

Case study # 3

20-year-old athlete who developed a life-threatening reaction to anesthesia during a simple elective surgical procedure. His response was unexpected, but not unusual for individuals who possess an inherited skeletal muscle disorder leading to a condition called malignant hyperthermia because the symptoms only appear in the presence of certain anesthetics.

Objectives:

Understand the sequence of events that leads to skeletal muscle contraction and relaxation.

Trace the history of cannabis use in medicine for the treatment and management of illness via nursing scholarly journal articles. Examine your sources for the following information below and describe the following:

1. Who are the stakeholders both in support of and in opposition to medicinal cannabis use?

2. What does current medical/nursing research say regarding the increasing use of medicinal cannabis?
