In health care and its bases of scientific theory, test, trial, and numerical success in outcomes comes into great conflict when tested by those who are not believers of western government. There is a fine line in which providers face when attempting to initiate treatment in those individuals as well as be open and accepting on those beliefs.

There have been many recent trials in theory and test in which have not been initiated by religion but also have tested and shadowed the rational to medical treatments. Some theories include the debate of vaccines, and the use of chemotherapy.

Other treatments that have been absolutely banned include that of abortion. History presented the length in which Women have fought for the right to make a choice in regards to their bodies, and also the ability to choose to plan their families. There until this day there has been great push back from Christians to perform the sinful act of terminating a birth even past of conception. The lines are set within both sides and in some areas of the world these religious beliefs mold practice, and law.

For providers as us, we have to be proactive in allowing the patient to voice their concerns and in a way explain particular treatment plans. There can also be the opportunity to adapt for the patient and accommodate their belief practice as well

Scientism is the belief that the best or only way to have any knowledge of reality is by means of the sciences (Moreland and Craig, 2003, pp. 346-350).  I think this statement about scientism is a little crazy now days.  Maybe a 100 years ago this was an ok way of thinking.  However, with all the world has come to and changes that have been made in science and healthcare, we could have better ways of thinking.  The fact any other claim to knowledge is opinion or false is far stretched as well.  I think as nurses it is important to remember a patient needs to be taken care of as a whole, not just their specific problem.  I think for a while it was shied away from, as no one wanted to touch religion during caring for a patient.  Now anymore it is important and encouraged to take care of a patient not just physically, but emotionally.  Often times that emotional piece for patients requires a religion or some belief they have.  There are lots of different religions and nurses have to remember that and put their personal beliefs aside to help better care for patients.

1. The clinical interventions for patients unwilling to quit cigarette smoking include the use of the motivational treatments, such as brief motivational interventions that are founded on the tenets of Motivational Interviewing (MI). The four general principles of MI are “the expression of empathy, developing discrepancy, rolling with resistance, and supporting self-efficacy are used to tailor-make MI counseling strategies to suit each patient’s needs” (Fiore, et al. 2008). Consequently, MI is a patient-centered counseling intervention that was proven to be successful in intensifying future attempts of smokers to quit the habit.

2. The best strategies to help clients to quit smoking include counseling and clinical interventions. According to the guidelines, clinicians strongly advocate for the use of intensive counseling regarding tobacco dependence, in addition to medication treatments to their patients who are addicted to tobacco. In addition to these intervention methods, patients should be provided with problem-solving or skills training during counseling sessions will help patients to develop methods of overcoming the tobacco addiction on their own too (Fiore, et al. 2008). In this regard, the guideline also recommends that health systems, insurers, and purchasers should be in a position to collaborate with the clinicians to make these suggested intervention treatments affordable and accessible to the tobacco smokers.

3. The guideline indicates that there are particular smoking cessation suggestions for special populations like the elderly. The special recommendations for the elderly include implementing the “4 As,” which are “ask, advise, assist, and arrange to follow up in patients who are over fifty years old aged 50 and older” (Fiore, et al. 2008). In addition to this fact, advice from physicians, telephone counseling, support programs from peers, counseling, the nicotine patch, as well as self-help materials that are specifically tailored to meet the demands of the aged were proven to be effective in treating tobacco use in adults aged 50 years and older. In this instance, clinicians are advised to provide counseling interventions for adolescent smokers to encourage them to stop smoking or abstain from tobacco use (Fiore, et al. 2008). Therefore, intervention methods for special populations, such as adolescents, are quite different from that of other special populations, such as the elderly people.

As a CNA to LPN, I have worked in an assisted living, rehabilitation center, and nursing homes. I worked alongside with so many people that have their routine, different culture and lifestyle. People who are comfortable using their hands to eat without any utensils. I also noticed people touching counters then putting their fingers inside their mouth or biting their nails. Some staff helped one patient and moved on to the next without handwashing. Based on so many research hand washing is very important. It is the first line of infection control and disease prevention.

Infection control is a necessity in any healthcare facilities. Healthcare personnel are the carrier to some diseases and may spread it among to different patients. No sick patients or frail residents who want to get an acquired facility infection. “It’s in your hands prevent sepsis in healthcare” World Health Organization (2018).  Patients, residents together with families are entrusting their lives to healthcare personnel to take care of them, to make them feel better. Not to get sepsis or worst diseases.

It is incredible that as simple as hand washing it will help to minimize or stop the spread of disease. I firmly believe and tried my best to abide by doing it the right way to protect myself, co-workers and especially the patients or residents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017), between staff, patients and family, hand washing should be a main topic of education to protect themselves from or to stop the spread of infection. Education of proper and correct way of handwashing is important. Because doing it too quickly will not be enough to eradicate the germs.

Until now and going onwards handwashing will have a significant role not just in healthcare facilities but also in personal space. Education and in-services in proper hand washing will go a long ways towards the patients, and staff, from CNAs to nurses or all primary providers. Let us not forget that as simple hand washing is the best preventative measures for disease and infection.
