My mother was hospitalized for pneumonia. After ten days of hospitalization and complications of the pneumonia my mom came home on a prescription inhaler and home oxygen because her saturation while ambulating would not go above 80% on room air. Also, an incentive spirometer was sent home with written instructions. The incentive spirometer was the most challenging for her to understand. She is 75 years old and has a high school diploma, but she is ready to learn because of her willingness to get better. I will be using nontraditional methods to teach my mother.

The learning objective is to understand the parts of the incentive spirometer and what the mean. There are printed materials to follow along. The formative assessment is an oral type of quiz I asked my mom to point to the parts of the incentive spirometer and tell me what they are and what do they mean. My mom then pointed and named the different parts of the spirometer and explained what it does. We did that several times, so I knew she had mastered the formative assessment.

The next learning objective is watching a video online demonstrating the use of the incentive spirometer. The summative assessment is how she demonstrated the proper use of the incentive spirometer after watching a video demonstration. The demonstration included proper position and holding the incentive spirometer correctly, sealing your lips around the mouth piece, and breathing in slowly to the correct goal number on the cylinder. My mom then held the incentive spirometer and demonstrated the proper use of the spirometer. The next time she had to use it, I was there and asked her to demonstrate again verbalizing the steps in order.

After my mom was finished, I then talked to her about the results of her demonstration. I told her that she knows and understands the proper use of her incentive spirometer by reading the printed materials, naming the parts of the spirometer and their functions. She did a successful demonstration in the correct order. Based on my evaluation my mom has successfully accomplished this demonstration.

Overview of the sections of the Scholar-Practitioner Project:

Disease surveillance is an essential part of public health. It provides valuable information to public health officials, allowing them to detect and prevent the spread of disease. In your Scholar-Practitioner Project, you create a disease surveillance system to monitor HIV/AIDS.. The assignments in this course, including the assignment due this week (described below), all represent sections of a Scholar-Practitioner Project that you will submit in its final form in Week 10. Each week (except Week 7) you will complete a brief assignment and submit it for grading and feedback. Each component is due by Day 7 of its respective week. Be sure to use your Instructor’s feedback on each submission to revise it before incorporating it into your final Scholar-Practitioner Project.

In Week 1, (HISTORY OF SURVEILLANCE) you write a analyzing the influence that specific historical events have had in the evolution of disease surveillance systems. In addition, you forecast the next phase(s) in disease surveillance and explain how the changes that you predict will impact public health policy and practice.

In Week 2, (Surveillance Subject and Data Sources)   you write about identifying the disease or condition that is the focus of your surveillance system. In addition, you evaluate potential data sources and processes associated with collecting and analyzing the data you identify.

In Week 3, (Traditional vs. Syndromic Surveillance)  you write about analyzing the practical ramifications of identifying, collecting, validating, and analyzing data for syndromic surveillance. In addition, you compare your analysis to traditional disease surveillance.

In Week 4 (Algorithm)  you write about explaining the algorithm of your surveillance system, including the strengths and limitations of the algorithm to monitor disease.

In Week 5, (Digital Dashboard)  you create a mock-up of a “digital dashboard” for your disease surveillance system.

In Week 6 (System Comparison)  you write about  analyzing and comparing modern disease surveillance systems implemented at the local, state, regional, and national levels used to monitor the disease or condition you selected.

In Week 8 (Tele-health) you write about analyzing the implications of tele-health for the surveillance of the disease/condition you selected and describe how you could incorporate tele-health into your surveillance system.

In Week 9 , you write about  that provides an overview of a selected country and condition or disease.

In Week 10, you submit your completed Scholar-Practitioner Project. It will consist of sections submitted in previous weeks, revised to reflect your Instructor’s feedback, as well as several new components.

Intrinsic motivation is defined as performing an activity for personal satisfaction rather for some consequence, a person who is intrinsically motivated acts For the Fun of a challenge rather than external pressures or rewards (Ryan, 2000). Extrinsic motivation is when an activity is performed to gain a separable outcome, an extrinsically motivated person acts in hopes of gaining an outside reward (Ryan, 2000). Motivation for the extrinsic person would be such as pay raises, bonuses, and benefits. Intrinsically motivated people perform an activity because they simply like the activity or the challenge, an extrinsically motivated person performs an activity for its instrumental value whether it be receiving a reward or avoiding punishment.

Characteristics of a performance-driven team is a team who works together and because of that a greater outcome is achieved. Eggenberger, Sherman, Keller (2014) stated that in any setting, “high-performance work teams rarely occur naturally. They must be created and managed. To instill effective teamwork into health care, leaders need to recognize and emphasize its importance”. Having a strong team with strong communication skills is a key characteristic to have. Our team at work is amazing and we work really well together. We are always helping each other out even if we are busy and behind with charting.

Motivation is an essential part to everyday life, task completion and performance results. Two types of motivation to be discussed are intrinsic and extrinsic. “Intrinsic motivation is something internal, either primal (such as the need to eat) or learned (such as the knowledge of healthful eating). Extrinsic motivation is something external and may be both positive (such as rewards) or negative (such as punishment). Repeated exposure to extrinsic motivation may help create an intrinsic motivation. (Eggenberger, Sherman & Keller, 2014)

When dealing with intrinsic motivation and example that relates to me is that of knowledge of nursing skills. I placed a great deal of motivation into my everyday tasks as a nurse, from practicing proper infection control to medication management and administration. These tasks need to be completed and with precision at that. Extrinsic motivation is a little different, an example that pertains to be would be picking up overtime at work or covering shifts that need to be filled. Currently at my place of employment we are short staffed on our 11pm to 7am shift. My work is offering an incentive to those whom are willing to work of an additional $100 dollars per shift worked. This is a reward that motivated employees to pick up overtime and coverage. 

“In any setting, high-performance work teams rarely occur naturally. They must be created and managed. To instill effective teamwork into health care, leaders need to recognize and emphasize its importance. They play a key role in helping a team develop the ability to collaborate effectively, build relationships and trust, innovate, and achieve results at a consistently high level.” ( Repovich, 2013) Characteristic that are essential are communication skills, team work ethics and motivation.

Write a 750-1,000 word statistical laboratory report using the information you obtained in the assigned readings for this topic.
