Introduction: Communication Change Challenge (CCC) Part 8
Part 8 is where you will evaluate the impact of the project as it relates to interpersonal communication and the course objectives (COs). It is important here that you clearly demonstrate your understanding of many of the course concepts through application to your course project.
Instructions
Remember that your patterns for communicating interpersonally have been developed over many years. Therefore, you should be neither surprised nor discouraged to find that changing your interpersonal communication behavior takes time. In order for you to take this project to its fullest potential, you may need to continue to modify, implement, and reinforce these new behaviors for far longer than the duration of the project. It is possible, however, to modify the way you communicate, and because the payoff is improvement to our communication and relationship outcomes, changing interpersonal communication is worth the effort. Based on the information that you provided, a borderline personality diagnosis, her resistance to medications, withdrawn behavior, and history of trauma, I would recommend trying the cognitive-behavioral therapeutic (CBT) approach. CBT is based on a theory that maintains how an individual structures his or her experiences largely determines how the individual feels or behaves (Wheeler, 2014). Cognitive therapy advocates guided discovery rather than challenging the patient’s views directly (Wheeler, 2014). The most effective approach is to allow the client to find the answers to their own problems or dilemmas as much as possible (Wheeler, 2014). Clinical strategies are used to help the individual recognize the dysfunctional nature of their thinking patterns and to help the individual change their own conclusions. CBT has a cognitive model for depression and a cognitive model for personality disorders specifically, which would both benefit your client.
Narrative therapy may be another approach that would work well with your client. Narrative therapy helps people separate themselves from the problem and allows room for a new and more constructive view of themselves (Nichols & Davis, 2020). Your client sounds as if she needs to explore what her problem actually is and realize that the problem is the problem, and that she is not the problem. The therapist will ask a series of questions to the lead the client to discuss times when the client was able to avoid the problem and will ask the client to elaborate on how those times came about, leading the client to focus on the positive and realize that more positive stories may be made (Nichols & Davis, 2020).
