Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) – 2025
Evidence-based medicine (EBM), previously translational medicine, can be defined as improving care based on empirical research and/or hands-on practice. The EBM’s approach is based on either direct patient care (bottom-up) or an experiment translated into guidelines (top-down). EBM is used in either in conjunction or as quality assessment tool(s) for continuous quality improvement (CQI). The healthcare leader must utilize the evidence to promote healthcare quality.
Explain the process of evidence-based analysis.

The Case Of Mrs. G.: Client Centered Communication And Collaboration – 2025
The Case of Mrs. G.
Mrs. G. is a 75 year old Hispanic woman who has been relatively well all of her life. She had been married for 50 years and had five children. Her children are grown with families of their own. All but one of her children live in other states. Mrs. G.’s husband passed away last year, which was devastating for her. She had been very close to him and relied upon him for everything. He was “the life of the party” she always said and was a loving and caring man. Since his passing, Mrs. G. has continued to live in the house they shared for 35 years. In the last month, Mrs. G. has fallen twice sustaining injuries, though minimal. Her home health nurse comes weekly to check in on her. Mrs. G. likes her very much and wishes she could come more often. Mrs. G.’s daughter who lives in the next town over, has been worried and decided with the urging of her siblings and the doctor to start looking for an assisted living facility for her mother. She found one last week and talked with the Director who said she would be happy to help in whatever way was best. The daughter decided to tell her mother that it was time for her to move, so she can be cared for and be safe. When she told her mother, Mrs. G. cried and said, “This will not happen ever. I plan to stay in this house of loving memories for the remainder of my life.”

CASE STUDY: Active Labor: Susan Wong
Mrs. Wong, a first-time mother, is admitted to the birthing suite in early labor after spontaneous rupture of membranes at home. She is at 38 weeks of gestation with a history of abnormal alpha-fetoprotein levels at 16 weeks of pregnancy.
She was scheduled for ultrasonography to visualize the fetus to rule out an open spinal defect or Down
syndrome, but never followed through. Mrs. Wong and her husband disagreed about what to do (keep
or terminate the pregnancy) if the ultrasonography indicated a spinal problem, so they felt they did not
want this information.
Reflective Questions
1. As the nurse, what priority data would you collect from this couple to help define relevant
interventions to meet their needs?
2. How can you help this couple if they experience a negative outcome in the birthing suite? What
are your personal views on terminating or continuing a pregnancy with a risk of a potential
anomaly? What factors may influence your views?
3. With the influence of the recent Human Genome Project and the possibility of predicting open
spinal defects earlier in pregnancy, how will maternity care change in the future?
