Required Resources Read/review the following resources for this activity: Textbook: Chapter 11 Lesson Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook) Initial Post Instructions In week three, we were looking at rights ethics with regards to Locke. As a reminder, Locke said we have inalienable rights to life, liberty, and property. It is immoral to violate them. Many think we have more rights than those listed by Locke. Some even think we have a right to health care. That means it is the duty of the state to provide each citizen with their medical needs. Rights theory says to respect the entitlements we have. If a right is inalienable, it cannot truly be violated ethically even with our consent. We have basic needs. Rights are something beyond needs. They are what we should be authorized to have. We are due what we have a right to. That is not always the case with need. For example, we need food, but people often go hungry. A need refers to something we need physically to exist. A right is a moral entitlement to something. Asking if we have a right to food is a moral question. Needs are determined by the requirements of the body and of material existence. Rights are determined by moral reflection, inquiry, an argument We have a right to own property. We do not need it to live. We could imaginably be allowed to use another’s. We have a right to own a home. We can rent. Initial Post Instructions For the initial post, respond to one of the following options, and label the beginning of your post indicating either Option 1 or Option 2: Option 1: Assess the moral solutions arrived at through “care” (care-based ethics) and “rights” ethics to social issues of ethical import such as poverty, drug use, and/or lack of health care, That is, note any ethical problems that arise related to those particular issues. Then, say how both care-based and rights theory of ethics would solve those problems. Are those solutions correct? Why or why not? What is your own approach there? Option 2: What moral guidelines should we use when it comes to recently introduced healthcare technologies of any kind (you will note and engage with your own examples) and social technologies of any kind (you will note and engage with your own examples)? Involve care-based ethics in your answer Follow-Up Post Instructions Respond to at least one peer. If possible, respond to one peer who chose an option different than the one you chose. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification. Make sure that you add additional information and not repeat the same information already posted on the discussion board as you further the dialogue.

Used the website and other to help with the discussion questions. Longest, B. B., & Darr, K. (2014). Managing health services organizations and systems )6th ed). Baltimore, MD: Health Professions Press. Hakanen, M., & Soudunsaari, A. (2012). Building trust in high-performing teams. Technology Innovation Management Review, 2 (6), 38–41. Healey, B. J., & Marchese, M. C. (2012). Foundations of health care management: Principles and methods. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass. 1. Workforce Analysis For this discussion question, review the scenario presented in the Vila Health: Human Resources multimedia piece. The operating room (OR) at your hospital has seen an increase in surgical cases. As a result of the increase, the OR schedule is unable to accommodate new elective cases for approximately two months. To accommodate patient demands and not lose business, the nurse manager would like to open two additional operating suites; however, due to lack of staff, she is unable to do so. For your initial response to the discussion, respond to the following: What information does the nurse manager need to conduct an analysis of the current workforce? Once all information is obtained, how will the nurse manager create a business case for the staffing need? One approach would be to return on investment versus the cost to staff. Finally, discuss the implications of not anticipating future needs of the organization, addressing the patient demand on the organization, the need for additional services, and staffing. Support your response with findings from the literature. 2. Staffing Alternatives Once a staffing need has been acknowledged, the decision must be made as to the appropriate employment type suited for the identified need. Options include full time, part time, per diem outsourcing and in the case of physicians, locum tenens. For your initial response to the below discussion question: Pick two employment types and define each. Identify the positives and negatives of each employment type you identified. 3. Competitive Advantages Through Workforce Diversity Changes in demographics of the United States population require organizations to develop and cultivate teams that reflect the characteristics and cultures of the patients they serve. Diversity and inclusion among the health care workforce, considered a strategic necessity by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), is an innovative necessity for organizations to deliver value and reduce disparities that currently exist. For your initial response, address the following: Discuss what a high-performing, highly diverse team is. Discuss why diversity should be everyone’s responsibility within the organization. Identify the implications of not cultivating and sustaining a diverse workforce for the organization as well as the consumers. Examine how culture and diversity can leverage the organization to make innovative strategic decisions. Requirements: 800-900 words

Scenarios: A researcher wants to know why individuals in Community A have a higher rate of a rare form of cancer when compared to those living in Community B. To find out the reasons for the differences in cancer rates in these two communities, the investigator surveyed residents about their lifestyle, noted the types of businesses that were present in the community and searched medical records. The researcher found that the headquarters for the Toxico Chemical Plant is located in Community A, there is a higher rate of cigarette smoking in this community and residents tended to delay or skip going to the doctor for an annual checkup. In Community B, the largest employer was a department store and on average, residents did not smoke as much as residents from Community A. However, like individuals from Community A, Community B residents tended to delay or skip their annual checkups with their doctor. Instructions: Minimum 300 words Read the scenario above and answer the following questions: What makes this a descriptive study? What type of data collection method was used in this scenario? What type of collection methods are usually used in descriptive studies? Why did the researcher collect information about the lifestyle of community residents? What about the type of businesses present in each community? Medical records? Can the investigator establish that the chemical plant and cigarette smoking are the cause for the higher rate of cancer among those in Community A? Can the investigator establish that lower smoking rates and the absence of a chemical factory explain the lower rate of cancer among those in Community B?
