Sarah is a 69-year old female that presented to the emergency department with shortness of breath. Her past medical history includes heart failure and COPD. Her pulse oximetry on room air is 82%. You notify the provider, and he orders oxygen at 2 L via nasal canula NC. Sarah’s chest x-ray reveals bilateral pneumonia. Her arterial blood gas result are below:

pH: 7.30

PaCO2: 58 mm Hg

PaO2: 78 mm Hg

HCO3: 26 mEq/L

Sarah is admitted to a general medical floor. You are the nurse assigned to Sarah.

1. What potential problems can occur based on the above findings?
2. How would you provide multidimensional care for Sarah?

 Nurse scholars have claimed that nursing is both a discipline and a profession. In order to understand these claims, we must first know what it means for nursing to have a “unique body of knowledge.” If we assume that nursing does, indeed, possess a unique body of knowledge, we can claim that nursing is a “basic science” rather than an “applied science.” Despite these claims, debate continues about nursing as discipline, profession, and science. Is nursing a discipline? A profession? Is nursing a basic science and/or applied science? In your initial post, state what you think about nursing as discipline, profession, and science. Explore the literature beyond that assigned to you for this week’s readings to help you formulate your position. You should include the following:

• What is a discipline? What is a profession? What’s the difference? What are examples of each?
• Does nursing fit the criteria for a “discipline” and “profession”?
• What is a “basic science”? What is an “applied science”? What’s the difference?
• Is nursing a “basic” or “applied” science?

Case Study, Chapter 1, Health Care Delivery and Evidence-Based Nursing Practice 

1. Suzanne Jones, 76-year-old patient with COPD is admitted to the ICU. Mrs. Jones is placed on mechanical ventilation to assist with her breathing. After 2 days on the ventilator, Mrs. Jones is extubated and then transferred to a medical-surgical unit. The medication regimen is adjusted during the hospitalization. Mrs. Jones is discharged home after 6 days. She and her family are pleased with the care she receive in the hospital. (Learning Objectives 3 and 6)

1. Describe the quality performance tools that may be used to demonstrate that the care and treatment rendered are both cost-efficient and of high quality. 
2. Describe the quality performance tools that may be used to demonstrate that the nursing care utilized is evidence-based care and high quality, resulting in patient satisfaction and good patient outcomes.

2. The registered nurse working in the cardiac care clinic is tasked with implementing quality improvement measures. To educate the clinic staff, the nurse plans an in-service program to introduce concepts of quality improvement and evidence-based practice. Additionally, the role of the case manager will be included in the presentation. The nurse plans on using care of the patient with Congestive Heart Failure as a template, and prepares sample clinical pathways, care maps, and multidisciplinary action plans. (Learning Objective 3)
