Course Scenario

Chaparral Regional Hospital is a small, urban hospital of approximately 60 beds, and offers the following:

• Emergency room services
• Intensive care
• Surgical care
• Obstetrics
• Diagnostic services
• Some rehabilitation therapies
• Inpatient pharmacy services
• Geriatric services
• Consumer physician referral services

Recently, the CEO has been hearing complaints from both patients and staff, varying from long wait times to rude physicians. You have been hired to design and implement a Quality Improvement Plan to help uncover quality problems and to satisfactorily resolve them.

Instructions

The CEO has received some resistance from the Board on undertaking a QI program. She has asked you to develop a set of talking points on the pros and cons of common measurement techniques used in healthcare that she can use the next time she runs into a Board member.

Talking points are used to quickly explain something by condensing it into a compelling, but easily digestible, list. If the goal is to increase support for a QI program, the talking points must provide the ideas she needs to convey in order to achieve the goal.

Your talking points should be submitted in a Word document minimum 2 pages. Your talking points should include the pros and cons of implementing a QI program.

Upon completion of your talking points, please prepare a PowerPoint presentation 6 slides with narration where you will explain each talking point to the CEO so they clearly understand and can answer questions from the Board. 

APA formatting for the talking points, and proper grammar, punctuation, and form are required.

1. Length of PowerPoint is secondary to the quality of the      presentation as a whole.
2. Highlight specific pros and cons of QI programs.
3. Use the Notes area on each slide as needed to expand on      the key points.

• Review the Resources and examine the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory, found on page 20 of Clark (2015).
• Review the Work Environment Assessment Template.
• Select and review one or more of the following articles found in the Resources:
  • Clark, Olender, Cardoni, and Kenski (2011)
  • Clark (2018)
  • Clark (2015)
  • Griffin and Clark (2014)

The Assignment (3-6 pages total):

Part 1: Work Environment Assessment (1-2 pages)

• Review the Work Environment Assessment Template you completed for this Module’s Discussion.
• Describe the results of the Work Environment Assessment you completed on your workplace.
• Identify two things that surprised you about the results and one idea you believed prior to conducting the Assessment that was confirmed.
• Explain what the results of the Assessment suggest about the health and civility of your workplace.

Part 2: Reviewing the Literature (1-2 pages)

• Briefly describe the theory or concept presented in the article(s) you selected.
• Explain how the theory or concept presented in the article(s) relates to the results of your Work Environment Assessment.
• Explain how your organization could apply the theory highlighted in your selected article(s) to improve organizational health and/or create stronger work teams. Be specific and provide examples.

Part 3: Evidence-Based Strategies to Create High-Performance Interprofessional Teams (1–2 pages)

• Recommend at least two strategies, supported in the literature, that can be implemented to address any shortcomings revealed in your Work Environment Assessment.
• Recommend at least two strategies that can be implemented to bolster successful practices revealed in your Work Environment Assessment.

Reflect upon the learning that you have accomplished throughout the previous weeks, and assess your achievement of each of the five course outcomes.

• CO 1: Discern leadership approaches that facilitate achievement of health outcomes through interprofessional collaborative practice within micro-, meso-, and macro-level systems.
• CO 2: Appraise the role of the MSN-prepared nurse to lead safe, efficient, ethical, high-quality, person-centered healthcare across complex systems.
• CO 3: Integrate communication modalities that convey cultural humility, value the diverse nature of individuals, and cultivate healthful work environments.
• CO 4: Apply change and leadership theories to plan sustainable, evidence-based quality improvement within an atmosphere that supports care for self and others.
• CO 5: Recognize individual strengths and opportunities for enhancement regarding leadership characteristics reflective of a MSN-prepared nurse.

For each course outcome, explain the learning that you accomplished. Include at least specific learning activity or assignment that contributed to your achievement of that outcome, and explain how it supported your learning.

Conclude with your plans for continued professional development of leadership competency within your future MSN role.

Include current, peer-reviewed scholarly support (outside of class resources) to validate your work.

Part 1: An Introduction to Clinical Inquiry (workplace violence)

Create a 5-slide PowerPoint presentation in which you do the following:

• Identify and briefly describe Workplace violence in healthcare
• Describe how you used keywords which was NURSING & WORKPLACE VIOLENCE IN HEALTHCARE to search on your chosen clinical issue of interest.
• Identify the four research databases that you used to conduct your search for the peer-reviewed articles you selected.  I WILL INCLUDE THE FOUR PEER REVIEWED ARTICLES AS AN ATTACHMENT.
• Provide APA citations of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected.

Your patient is a 52-year-old female who presents with a complaint of epigastric pain and burning for the past 6 months. The patient states that the burning and pain improves slightly if she takes “Tums” over the counter. The patient also states that she has taken over-the-counter famotidine, however, still continues with epigastric pain on a daily basis.

Assessment

Her examination shows mild abdominal bloating. Her vital signs are a BP of 110/74, Pulse of 72, Respirations of 18 and Temperature of 98.2. As the provider you ordered an H. Pylori breath test which was positive.

Part 1:

1. What medications would you prescribe to treat the H. Pylori and why did you choose this treatment plan?
2. How long would have the patient remain on the treatment prescribed?
3. What are the possible side effects of the medications prescribed?
4. What education would you provide to the patient regarding both H. Pylori and the treatment plan?

Part 2:

1. If the patients H. Pylori breath test had been negative, how would the treatment plan have been different, had the patient been diagnosed with GERD?
