Discussion: Safe Prescribing

In 1915, the Drug Enforcement Administration was formed, known then as the Bureau of Internal Revenue. Recognizing the variance in state laws and the process for completing applications for prescriptive authority and DEA registration is essential to the role of the NP as a prescriber. Within the last decade, safe prescribing of opioids has also become a national concern. For this Discussion, you will focus on the process for obtaining prescriptive authority after successfully completing your program of study and passing a National Certification Exam. You also will explore safe prescribing.

To prepare:

· Review your state’s process for obtaining prescriptive authority and associated fees

· Review the DEA website and review the process for obtaining a DEA number and associated fees.

· Review and select one of the following case studies and analyze the provider information:

o Case Study One: Lori, FNP-BC, is a new graduate and has recently passed her certification exam. She has just been hired to work for a Primary Care Clinic in a small town. She will be working with one physician at one site.

o Case study Two: James, FNP-BC, works with a physician who specializes in pain control. He works in several clinics in the large urban city where he practices.

By Day 3

Post a brief summary of your case study and an explanation of the appropriate prescriptive authority and DEA registration process needed for the case study you selected. Then, explain the safe prescribing practices that these providers should use for these settings.

Application 2: Meaningful Use Paper

Why are many health care organizations hesitant to adopt electronic health records (EHR) when they have the potential to improve quality, increase access, and reduce costs? Some organizations are concerned with the ethical and legal issues that may arise in daily operations. In 2010, legislators noticed health care’s reluctant transition into full EHR integration, and began to provide financial incentives to those organizations that not only adopt EHRs, but also use them meaningfully to improve quality of patient care. As an advanced practice nurse, it is important to be aware of the challenges, policies, and incentives associated with integrating EHR systems. It is also critical that you understand the concept of “meaningful use” and how it plays out in today’s health care organizations.

In this Application Assignment, you analyze meaningful use criteria to determine the authentic legal, financial, and ethical issues that may surround it.

Descriptive Statistics

This week, you explore key statistical concepts related to data and problem solving through the completion of the following exercises using SPSS and the information found in your Statistics and Data Analysis for Nursing Research textbook. The focus of this assignment is to become familiar with the SPSS data analysis software and to develop an understanding of how to calculate descriptive statistics and make conclusions based on those calculations. As you formulate your responses, keep in mind that descriptive statistics only allow you to make conclusions and recommendations for the sample at hand—not for the larger population to which that sample may belong.

To prepare:

• Review      the Statistics and Data Analysis for Nursing Research chapters      assigned in this week’s Learning Resources. Pay close attention to the      examples presented, as they provide information that will be useful when      you complete the software exercise this week. You may also wish to review      the Research Methods for Evidence-Based Practice video      resources to familiarize yourself with the software.
• Refer      to the Week      4 Descriptive Statistics Assignment page and follow      the directions to calculate descriptive statistics for the data provided      using SPSS software. If you run into any difficulties or problems, post      them to the Week 4 Discussion 2 area (see attached file)
• Download      and save the Polit2SetA.sav (see      attached file) data set. You will open the data file in SPSS.
• Compare      your data output against the tables presented in the Week 4 Descriptive Statistics SPSS Output      document (see attached file) This will enable you to become      comfortable with defining variables, entering data, and creating tables      and graphs.
• Formulate      an initial interpretation of the meaning or implication of your      calculations.

Assignment 1: Applying Current Literature to Clinical Practice

Literature in psychotherapy differs from other areas of clinical practice. Generally, there are no clinical trials in psychotherapy because it is often neither appropriate nor ethical to have controls in psychotherapy research. This sometimes makes it more difficult to translate research findings into practice. In your role, however, you must be able to synthesize current literature and apply it to your own clients. For this Assignment, you begin practicing this skill by examining current literature on psychodynamic therapy and considering how it might translate into your own clinical practice. ( see attachment)

  • What was the specific intervention that was used? Is this a new intervention or one that was already used?

• Explain whether the limitations of the study might impact your ability to use the findings/outcomes presented in the article. Support your position with evidence-based literature.

Note: The presentation should be 5–10 slides, not including the title and reference slides. Include presenter notes (no more than ½ page per slide) and use tables and/or diagrams where appropriate. Details:

Write a proposal paper (1,250-1,500 words) for a major change project that you would like to lead.

Identify a health care issue that interests you and explain why.

Develop a rationale using evidence-based research, including:

1) The background.

2) Statistical findings.

3) Probable stakeholders.

4) Logical conclusions.

Design an implementation plan for the project, including:

1) A communications plan.

2) Creation of a design and implementation team by roles.

List the strategies you would use to lead the team to success and identify potential obstacles that may be faced, along with plans to deal with them.
