Overview

This module examines the history of healthcare reform including the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act (PPACA or ACA). Changes in healthcare policies can impact healthcare consumers both positively and negatively. For example, under the ACA children can obtain coverage through their parents’ employer-sponsored or privately purchased insurance plan through the age of 26 (Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation [KFF], 2018). According to KFF, since this provision of the bill came into effect in 2013, the rate of uninsured nonelderly adults dropped from 20.5% to 12.2% in 2016 and even with all the progress, young people remain the least insured age group in the United States. Healthcare reform affects the consumer as well as the provider and healthcare worker. In this module, you will examine populations affected by the ACA, and the transition from traditional healthcare to one with a strong governmental influence. You will have the opportunity to compare and contrast traditional healthcare in the United States with the ACA, as well as explore changes in the current policies that impact health care in the United States.

Use the learning materials and additional resource readings from this week and reflect on whether you oppose or support the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Consider the nursing professional’s position as a caregiver and/or the healthcare leader as an administrator. Explore two significant components of the ACA that could potentially impact specific populations unjustly. Appraise the current political climate as it relates to repealing and replacing the ACA. For this weeks’ discussion, identify at least two reasons for keeping the ACA and at least two reasons that it should be repealed, replaced, or revised. Provide rationale for each.

Group therapy may be beneficial for children and adolescents, because it often provides an environment that normalizes clients’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. However, as with any therapeutic approach, group therapy might not be appropriate for every client, every setting, or even every therapist. By Day 3

Post an explanation of the most likely DSM-5 diagnosis for the client in the case study. Be sure to link those behaviors to the criteria in the DSM-5. Then, explain group therapeutic approaches you might use with this client.  Explain expected outcomes for the client based on these therapeutic approaches. Finally consider legal and ethical implications of counseling children and adolescent clients with psychiatric disorders. Support your approach with evidence-based literature.

Consider an area in health care in which you work or are interested in working. Examine the dynamics of the interprofessional team (physicians, nurses, physical therapists, social workers, health care administrators, etc.) in that setting. In a 1,000-1,250-word paper, explain how communication and collaborative strategies can be applied to ensure respectful interactions and to prevent or address potential issues among the team in that health care setting. Include the following:

1. Describe the health care setting and summarize the various individuals or teams typically working together in that setting.
2. Discuss what types of issues may occur and how these affect dynamics within the setting for health care workers and for patients and their families.
3. Discuss attributes of a healthy culture that help individuals or groups perform as a team.
4. Describe qualities of effective communication. Discuss how communication styles can be applied to facilitate productive communication.
5. Chapter 8 of your textbook discusses the dynamics of successful interprofessional health care teams. What is a boundary-spanning activity you could incorporate as a leader that would support a collaborative culture and enhance communication? Consider the interprofessional team you would be working with.
6. Explain how employee satisfaction impacts patient care. Describe qualities of professional communication that contribute to acceptable interactions with patients, their families, and other health care professionals.
7. Explain what your role is as a health care leader in helping to facilitate collaboration and clear communication among an interprofessional team, as well as with patients and their families.
