This is a Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) assignment. 

The purpose of this assignment is to assess leadership styles, traits, and practices as a nursing professional, establish the importance of effective interprofessional communication as a leader in nursing, and to explore the role of servant leadership in nursing practice.

Read the study materials on leadership and complete the topic quiz activities to better understand your leadership qualities.

Upon completion, summarize and share with your group what you learned about your specific leadership qualities, so you can become familiar with how you are similar and different from your peers when it comes to being a leader.

As a group, review the study materials related to servant leadership. Using what you have learned about the tenets of servant leadership and traits and practices of successful leaders, create a 10-12 slide PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes. Add an additional slide for references at the end of your presentation.  

Include the following in your presentation:

1. Each group member: Create a slide that summarizes your leadership style, traits, and practices.
2. Compare the personal leadership styles of your group members, including commonalities between group members’ strengths and weaknesses.
3. Explain why it is important for nursing professionals to be aware of their personal leadership style, traits, and practices.
4. Discuss what leadership traits and styles are necessary to be an effective communicator. Explain the importance of leaders adapting communication approaches when working interprofessionally (across ancillary departments, vendors, community members).
5. Discuss how nursing professionals can benefit from integrating the tenets of servant leadership to empower and influence others as they lead.
6. Discuss how leaders who practice servant leadership and have a strong understanding of their personal leadership traits can successfully lead others and navigate the unique challenges that are part of nursing and health care. Provide two examples that illustrate your main ideas.

You are required to cite to a minimum of three sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and relevant to nursing practice. 

Refer to the resource, “Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations,” located in the Student Success Center, for additional guidance on completing this assignment in the appropriate style. 

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. 

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. 

My part is Beneficence

1. Select one of the four primary principles (Autonomy, Beneficence, Nonmaleficence, Justice) from the Principles-Based Model from the readings to apply to the case. (Important: Coordinate with your group to ensure that each member selects a different principle).
2. Apply the specific principle you have selected to the case and in one to two paragraphs explain how applying your selected principle would help resolve this dilemma. In making your argument, be sure to:
   • Identify the various facets of the dilemma.
   • Identify all stakeholders.
   • Address each component of the principle.
   • Propose a step-by-step plan for resolution of the dilemma (with rationales and alternatives, where appropriate).
   • Identify potential outcomes of the proposed resolution.

Imagine that, for about a year, your nursing unit has been involved in an intensive campaign to improve patient satisfaction scores with pain management. You are getting good data from your patients, as the length of stay on this inpatient geriatric medical nursing unit is only about 6 days. Your hospital does 100% survey to inpatients, and the response rate is about 25%, which is higher than it has been. This notwithstanding, the percent of “patient very satisfied” (top box), with a score of 5, has been in the low 70s. The national benchmark for medical surgical units like yours is about 85% very satisfied. Of all the units in your hospital, your unit is the lowest scoring on this HCAPHS survey. But as your unit is the only geriatric medical nursing unit in the hospital, you’d always thought it was the nature of the patient population.
You have been the day shift representative to the QI team, and the scores on your unit are posted monthly. Here are the numerous strategies that have been tried on your unit and the timeframes.

For this Discussion, examine the strategies and interventions tried in your unit and consider the following questions: a) Were the strategies effective in creating a sustainable change on your nursing unit, and b) To what extent can your nurse manager and CNO count on your unit exceeding the national benchmark in the next quarter, the next year? That is, does this run chart have some predictive ability? Does the run chart support the nursing unit’s decision to celebrate? To what extent can the leadership be confident that the trend will continue?

By Day 3

Based on the scenario, explain what was done successfully and where improvement was needed in the quality improvement process. Identify the performance improvement tools, and explain how they contributed to the outcome.

Support your response with references from the Resources and professional nursing literature. Your posts need to be written at the capstone level (see checklist).

1. Why is the subject of workplace health and safety of concern to nurses? 

How are these concepts related to patient safety and patient outcomes? 

2. What action is suggested when you are faced with an angry or hostile coworker?

3. Why is substance misuse among nurses a serious concern? What is the most appropriate way to handle a suspicion that a coworker may be involved in serious substance misuse?

4. What is the most common physical injury experienced by LPNs and nursing assistants? How can a nurse manager help staff avoid physical injury at work? 

5. Describe several examples of sexual harassment in the workplace. Discuss methods of dealing with these instances.

6. Review the policies and procedures on the following safety issues in your current clinical rotation. Compare with other students in the class. What are the similarities and differences? What might this mean in terms of workplace safety?

• Violence 

3. Go to the ANA website and explore the sections on workplace and patient safety under the heading “Professional Nursing Practice.” 

Which concepts discussed in these sections are particularly important to the beginning RN? Why? 

4. Interview one of the staff nurses on your unit. Explore his or her feelings and concerns related to the following topics. Based on the comments, develop strategies to address the concerns.

• Substance abuse among nurses

• Emergency preparation 

• Quality of work life within the organization
