This is part 1 of your required term paper. In this part, you are to choose a topic as your focus. Choose a topic that will incorporate 3-4 of the concepts discussed within this course (such as ethics, leadership, communication, and quality) and write a short 50 word or less summary of what you plan to address. Then, develop an outline of information that you plan to include (Refer to the Outline Template and Grading Rubric). The provided outline template can be downloaded, and your information inserted into the outline. (see Templates attached below). Topics to Choose from:

1. Magnet      designation; what it means for a hospital including      the ANCC’s five magnet model components, how it affects current nursing      practice, and how it affects diverse communities.
2. Clinical      decision support systems (protocols and      guidelines): how their use promotes patient safety and provides      decision-making assistance with computerized alerts and reminders to enhance      health and patient care across the life span.
3. Healthy      Work Environment; how methods to      resolve conflicts in the workplace are developed. How might patient care      be affected when conflicts are present among nursing staff?
4. Lateral      nurse violence: include a discussion of      two of the following:

               How does lateral incivility affect diversity in the nursing profession?

               What can the nurse do if feeling intimidated, bullied, constantly belittled, or on the receiving end of anger outburst from another nurse? (Address gender identity or ethnicity issues)

               Do negative behaviors in the workplace always mean incivility or violence/abuse?

               How can the patterns of violence and incivility be recognized and stopped?

               How might patient care be affected when lateral incivility may be present among nursing staff?

5. Emergency preparedness and response; how it relates to an emergency health threat such as a bioterrorism incident or the current CPVID-19 pandemic. How might patient care be affected, and policies and procedures changed?

6. Mass Casualty events: the role of nurses in preparing and responding. How might patient care across the life span be affected?

7. Joint Commission or DNV accreditation process: the impact it has on patient care. The role of the professional nurse in influencing the advancement of the nursing profession. How might patient care be affected?

8. Root Cause Analysis: Provide and example and answer the following questions, “When is a root cause analysis used in health care?” “How is this analysis different from just interviewing staff members about their actions?”  “What is the final goal of doing a root cause analysis?”  “Why have some suggested replacing the term “root cause analysis” with “systems analysis?”  “How effective is doing a root cause analysis to improve patient safety across the life span?” 

9. Latent Errors: discuss the factors that may lead to latent errors involving nurses. How might patient care be affected?

Patient Profile M.S. is an 81-yr-old woman who came to the United States from India 4 years ago with her son and daughter-in-law and their 4 children. She has several health problems, including coronary artery disease, hypertension, osteoarthritis in her right hip, and diabetes. Her daughter-in-law is the primary caregiver and often brings her to the urban community health clinic for a variety of health-related problems. Recently, M.S. has been having memory problems. The entire family comes to the health clinic with M.S. Because English is a second language (Hindustani is their first language) for all the adult family members, the staff relies on the oldest granddaughter to interpret. At this clinic visit, M.S. is presenting with shortness of breath. Through her granddaughter’s interpretation, she tells the nurse that she is having trouble walking up the stairs in the apartment building. The nurse does the history and assessment, checks her blood glucose (which is within normal limits), and tells her that she should get more exercise. Given M.S.’s memory problems and limited English, the nurse does not complete a 24-hour dietary recall or teach her or the family about diabetes management. M.S. is scheduled for an appointment with the cardiologist for an evaluation of her hypertension and heart disease. Two weeks later, when she sees the cardiologist, her shortness of breath is much worse, and she is having chest pain. She is hospitalized immediately. Meanwhile, the clinic supervisor is completing a chart audit for the clinic’s quality review program. She is reviewing M.S.’s chart and notices that, although she has been a patient in the clinic for 3 years, she has never received instructions on blood glucose monitoring or general diabetes management. The clinic has a nurse diabetes educator who teaches individual patients and groups of patients with diabetes. The clinic manager reviews these findings with the nurse and asks why she has not recommended that M.S. see the diabetes educator. The nurse states that with M.S.’s memory problems and the language barrier, she assumed that M.S. and her family would not benefit from the consultation.

In a 750-1,000 word paper, create a plan of action to incorporate health promotion strategies for this family. Include the following:

1. Describe the SDOH that affect the family health status. What is the impact of these SDOH on the family? Discuss why these factors are prevalent for this family.
2. Based on the information gathered through the family health assessment, recommend age-appropriate screenings for each family member. Provide support and rationale for your suggestions.
3. Choose a health model to assist in creating a plan of action. Describe the model selected. Discuss the reasons why this health model is the best choice for this family. Provide rationale for your reasoning.
4. Using the model, outline the steps for a family-centered health promotion. Include strategies for communication.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is a country in Africa endowed with various resources and recurring epidemics such as Ebola. The culture is highly tied to strong family structures. Language differences from cultural differences negatively impact health literacy. Therefore, it is incumbent upon health care professions to deliver health care information that the patient can easily comprehend.

Often, patient education materials are written in advanced reading levels that non-native English speakers may find it difficult to comprehend. One of the strategies is the use of visual aids. Not only do visual aids promote active interaction, but visual aids also aid in visual learners. The health care practitioners can point to some of the body parts that are complex to understand. The effect of the disease can also be explained from visual charts, videos, or models. A simulation in necessary instances is also essential. For patients speaking English as a second language, the health care professions can speak slowly and use simple sentences.

In order to care for a patient and effectively educated them on their treatment, the healthcare professional needs to have an understanding of their culture, beliefs and attitudes of that individual. Lack of understanding of the cultural differences or ignoring a patients beliefs, values or attitudes can impede the learning process, which can result in nonadherence of the treatment. Although all cultures possess different styles of beliefs, views or practices, it is important not to stereotype, since everyone develops their own style of practices(Falvo, 2011).

Providing care to a patient that is a Muslim and of Islamic faith the healthcare professional should understanding that their faith can influence decision-making, health practices and family dynamics. Some important differences of a Muslim could be their diet, ideas of modesty, privacy and touch restrictions. During the interview the healthcare provider should determine if they have a good understanding of English. Do they need a translator phone, or would they prefer having a family member translate. It would be important to know that eye contact between the opposite gender should be avoided as well as physical contact. Say, the patient is a female and the healthcare worker a male, communication would need to be completed with the spouse(Attum, Hafiz, Malik, & Shamoon, 2020).Taking into consideration their religious beliefs and need to pray five times daily, education should be scheduled to respect their need to perform the prays. Building a trusting relation, showing respect for their culture and providing their individual needs can improve the receptiveness of the Muslim patient to the education needed for a positive outcome(Falvo, 2011).
