Professionalism in Nursing

Accountability is a critical element of patients’ safety and nursing practice. Battié and Steelman (2014) define accountability as being answerable to oneself and others for one’s actions. Nurses are accountable to themselves, their patients and families, their colleagues, workplace, and profession. Nurses should, therefore, hold themselves responsible for the advocacy of their patients, lifelong learning, and continuity of care. Depending on nurses’ formal obligation, three major accountability domains form the basis of nursing, and they include legal, deontological codes, and moral principles and values (Rubio-Navarro et al., 2019). Therefore, it is essential for nurses to be accountable in their services for provisional of better nursing care and improve patients’ outcomes.

One of the reasons for accountability in nursing is to enhance continuity of care. Nurses are accountable to patients and after their surgery (Battié and Steelman, 2014). As part of the continuity of care, nurses should be responsible for providing caring services to their patients. For instance, nurses should ensure that their patients receive safe and high-quality care after their surgery. Such care requires the nurse to report the patient’s existing health issues, risks of complications, and immediate care needs.

It is critical to expand the current clinical skill set and implement evidence-based practice findings for the world to meet the growing healthcare needs. The implementation of evidence-based practice findings will help guide nursing interventions (Davis, 2017). As such, clinical competency helps in active participation and maintaining the necessary skills to provide exceptional care for patients. The focused accountable interactions allow nurses to clarify critical points which may impact patients’ safety and outcomes. Acting as a mentor and offering assistance to junior nurses who are learning to perform new tasks to help raise their confidence will ensure the nursing profession grows into one which provides the best services possible. It will also help them embrace accountability in compliance with the nursing standards.

Although Canada is contiguous to the United States and has some cultural and historical similarities, Canada’s population enjoys a vastly superior health status. Reasons are many, can be traced historically, and are related to a different view of the role of government. The experience of Canada demonstrates that neither a heterogeneous population nor a health system that has to wait for lines for services is the reason for poor health. By looking critically at what produces good health in Canada, much can be learned about steps the U.S. might need to take if population health is its goal.

The Canadian Best Practices Portal challenges Canadian public health practitioners and researchers to create upstream interventions aimed at the source of a population health problem or benefit. What is being done to address the influences on population health in Canada?

To prepare for this Assignment Search the Internet and scholarly research for examples of Canadian “upstream interventions” that can be put forth as examples of either effective or ineffective efforts to improve population health.

The Assignment (2–4 pages):

• Provide a description of an existing intervention in Canada, intended to improve health inequities. Include an explanation of the inequity and how the intervention targets upstream determinants of health.
• Describe the organizations involved and/or social policies enacted in the implementation of the intervention.
• Explain whether or not the intervention was/is successful and what lessons public health practitioners can learn from that experience that might improve population health in the United States.

Enhancing teamwork across care provider levels: The manager of a medical surgical unit has observed, and had complaints about, lack of teamwork between the RN’s and the patient care techs (PCT’s). Your task is to research an intervention to enhance teamwork on the unit.

1. Write a PICO question based on a scenario you choose from the list of scenarios attached below.  Use the templates in the EBP Step by Step 3 article to help create your questions. You may need to do a pre-search to finding an intervention (the “I”) that has been studied and published to solve the problem.
2. Identify the PICO elements for each question. 
3. Develop a search strategy using at least 3 keywords from the P, I, and O parts of your PICO, 1 synonym for one of the keywords, and 1 MeSH term for one of your keywords. 
4. Locate 4 articles that help answer your PICO question.  The articles must meet the following requirements: 
   • must be primary source quantitative research articles.  
   • No article can be older than 2017. 
5. Obtain pdfs of the four articles you selected from the ResU database.  They must show the full text of the entire article. If not available for the ResU database, you may request access from the ResU Library, or you can email me the citation for the article, and I will attempt to locate a pdf of it.
