Instructions:

1. Go to this link: http://www.mdc.edu/main/advisement/careers/career_assessments.aspx or MDC’s Career and Advisement website, then select career exploration and FOCUS2

2. Select Create An Account from the options at the top and type in Miami Dade College.

3. Provide the access code when prompted, which should be MDC-Sharks. If this code does not work, simply click the Miami Dade College Contact Information link at the top-left corner of the webpage to find a code there. Complete the remaining fields indicated on the page.

4. Once you have completed the account login information, move on to the next step and click on the main menu.

5. Click on Career Readiness, then on Academic Strengths and complete the inventory. Answer the following questions according to your results:

Ø Does this occupation correspond to your values or does it conflict with your values? Consider things like family life, work-life balance, financial goals, traveling, etc.  Be specific and thoughtful in your response. 

8. Now that you have researched, it is time to create your S.M.A.R.T. Action Plan. Once you have built your action plan and reviewed it, attach it to this document after this page for submission. Think about your academic and career goals over the next 1 or 2 years. Then, identify one or two mini-goals you should accomplish to help you achieve your ultimate goal. Create an Action Plan to help you accomplish your mini goals. This plan MUST contain all of the characteristics of a S.M.A.R.T. action plan, specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. 

Qualitative Research

Write a fully developed and detailed APA essay addressing each of the following points/questions. There is no required word count; be sure to completely answer all the questions for each question in detail. Separate each section in your paper with a clear heading that allows your professor to know which bullet you are addressing in that section of your paper. Support your ideas with at least one (1) source using citations in your essay. Make sure to cite using the APA writing style for the essay. The cover page and reference page are required. Review the rubric criteria for this assignment.

Conduct a literature search to select a qualitative research study on the topic identified in Module 1. Conduct an initial critical appraisal of the study. 

Respond to the overview questions for the critical appraisal of qualitative studies, including:

• What type of qualitative research design was utilized to conduct the study?
• Are the results valid/trustworthy and credible?

o  How were the participants chosen? 

o  How were accuracy and completeness of data assured? 

o  How plausible/believable are the results? 

• Are implications of the research stated?

o  May new insights increase sensitivity to others’ needs? 

o  May understandings enhance situational competence?

• What is the effect on the reader?

o  Are the results plausible and believable? 

o  Is the reader imaginatively drawn to the experience? 

• What are the results of the study?

o  Does the research approach fit the purpose of the study? 

• How does the researcher identify the study approach?

o  Are the data collection and analysis techniques appropriate? 

• Is the significance/importance of the study explicit?

Conduct a literature search in the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) using the terms middle range theory, mid-range theory, and nursing. Select one of the articles where the development of the middle range theory is the major focus of the paper. Share the article citation and describe how the theory was developed.

Healthcare providers are expected to do no harm and provide care at patients’ best interest. However, over the past 150 years, health care has become more of a business, than a public service. The access to, the cost of, and quality of health care has gone in the wrong direction. I have a Medical Director that gets bonuses from all 5’s Press Ganey surveys telling the Risk Management Director that leaving peripheral IV accesses for patients that are going to be directly admitted into hospitals via private car from our Immediate Care Centers should have that option as a patient satisfier. Even though, our legal department stands against it as a patient safety issue. Medicine and technology has evolved so much that organizations are challenged to sustain the expensive equipment, training to handle the equipment, etc. That is a result of many factors including the variability of charges.“In the Dallas market, a knee replacement could cost between $16,772 and $61,585 (267% cost variation) depending on the hospital” (Salmond, S. & Echevarria, M., 2017). Instead of, focusing on expensive ways to cure diseases, a shift is needed for much more reasonable focus on prevention of diseases. Nursing has a critical contribution in healthcare reform and the demands for a safe, quality, patient-centered, accessible, and affordable healthcare system and require a new or enhanced skill set on wellness and population care, with a renewed focus on patient-centered care, care coordination, data analytics, and quality improvement.

The ultimate goals of healthcare reform are to increase the number of insured and to increase the quality of care while trying to stabilize or reduce costs.  People are suffering from chronic disease conditions and their costs.  The number of the people with chronic disease and death rates are increasing each year (Medical Mutual, 2017). Most of the risk factors of these chronic conditions are preventable.  Studies show that disease prevention can effectively reduce health care spending.  If the health care system concentrates on prevention and wellness programs it could substantially reduce the incidence of chronic disease, contribute to healthier lives and save money spent on treatment.  A recent study indicates that just a one percent reduction in adult smoking rates could result in 30,000 fewer heart attacks, 16,000 fewer strokes and save more than $1.5 billion over five years (Democratic Policy Committee, 2009).  Shifting our nation’s focus toward preventive health will improve the health and productivity of the people as well as in cost savings.
