Thoughts4/1 – 2025

What are your thoughts??

Nurse leaders are known for their leadership skills, knowledgeable resources and a person of power. To be able to run a successful team or a successful department in the hospital, a nurse leader must advocate for their employees. Nurse leaders run a department of a hospital but it is ultimately the staff nurses that provide safe and effective patient care, adapt to changes of the department and to meet the needs of the hospital. A way that nurse leaders advocate for their employees by treating everyone with the same respect and fairness. If a leader is fair in all measures of leading a team, then favoritism is eliminated. Another example is how “nursing leaders can advocate for staff by actively involving staff in decisions that directly affect the practice environment” (Tomajan, 2012). Actively involving staff can make them feel wanted and part of a team that they want to work hard for and take the time to make it better. Nurse leaders can also advocate for nursing resources that are used every day by patient care.

Advocacy for nurse leaders directly to employees can affect patient care and outcomes in many ways. If nurses have the proper resources such as supplies to care for their patients, breaks when needed, and interpersonal relationship with their leaders and managers in the department and hospital that they work in, then providing safe and efficient care is easy. If nurses have proper staffing, nurses are able to care for each patient in a safe, timely manner. If staff nurses feel safe with expressing fears and frustrations and having support from nurse leaders, then they are more likely to work feeling positive and uplifted by their nurse leaders.  Effective and meaningful leadership can lead staff nurses down the path of support, a positive environment and a successful department to care for patients and their families.

Foodie – 2025

Food addiction is a somewhat controversial term. When considering that obesity is a significant issue in any field of practice, the Advanced Practice Nurse must be aware of current research and treatment discussions. Watch the video in Week 8: Learning Materials from Dr. Mark Gold, who is a world-renowned expert on addiction-related diseases, and Ashley Gearhardt, PhD., a food addiction expert. Read the article in Week 8: Learning Materials that discusses Food Addiction in general and then locate a second article that deals with your population specific program, i.e. family, pediatrics, women, psychiatric, geriatric, acute care, etc.

In your one-two page journal submission, discuss the concept of Food Addiction and possible scenarios or patients that you are likely to encounter in your practice as an APRN.

Finally, discuss your personal thoughts on food addiction – is this real or junk science? Why or why not? How do you intend to address obesity in your own practice?

The paper submission should be 500-750 words in length and in APA format.

Big Data Risks And Rewards – 2025

When you wake in the morning, you may reach for your cell phone to reply to a few text or email messages that you missed overnight. On your drive to work, you may stop to refuel your car. Upon your arrival, you might swipe a key card at the door to gain entrance to the facility. And before finally reaching your workstation, you may stop by the cafeteria to purchase a coffee.

From the moment you wake, you are in fact a data-generation machine. Each use of your phone, every transaction you make using a debit or credit card, even your entrance to your place of work, creates data. It begs the question: How much data do you generate each day? Many studies have been conducted on this, and the numbers are staggering: Estimates suggest that nearly 1 million bytes of data are generated every second for every person on earth.

As the volume of data increases, information professionals have looked for ways to use big data—large, complex sets of data that require specialized approaches to use effectively. Big data has the potential for significant rewards—and significant risks—to healthcare. In this Discussion, you will consider these risks and rewards.

To Prepare:

  1. Review the Resources and reflect on the web article Big Data Means Big Potential, Challenges for Nurse Execs.
  2. Reflect on your own experience with complex health information access and management and consider potential challenges and risks you may have experienced or observed.

Post a description of at least one potential benefit of using big data as part of a clinical system and explain why. Then, describe at least one potential challenge or risk of using big data as part of a clinical system and explain why. Propose at least one strategy you have experienced, observed, or researched that may effectively mitigate the challenges or risks of using big data you described. Be specific and provide examples.
