Benchmark – Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal 

            

Students maintained and  submitted weekly reflective narratives throughout the course to explore  the personal knowledge and skills gained throughout this course. This  assignment combines those entries into one course-long reflective  journal that integrates leadership and inquiry into current practice as  it applies to the Professional Capstone and Practicum course.

This  final submission should also outline what students have discovered  about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses  that surfaced during the process, additional resources and abilities  that could be introduced to a given situation to influence optimal  outcomes, and, finally, how the student met the competencies aligned to  this course.

The final journal should address a variable  combination of the following, while incorporating your specific clinical  practice experiences:

1. New practice approaches
2. Interprofessional collaboration
3. Health care delivery and clinical systems
4. Ethical considerations in health care
5. Practices of culturally sensitive care
6. Ensuring the integrity of human dignity in the care of all patients
7. Population health concerns

10. Leadership and economic models
11. Health disparities

While  APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid  academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references  should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be  found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

Purpose 

Nurse practitioners actively engage in the process of translating nursing knowledge into practice, thereby establishing evidence-based approaches within the discipline.  Throughout this process, a theoretical framework provides a meaningful context to guide and support the evidence-based practice. The purpose of this assignment is to identify a theory or theoretical model which can be used as a framework for a future evidence-based project during your nurse practitioner education.

Requirements: 

In Week 7, students will create a PowerPoint slide show with notes pages to evaluate the use of a theory for an EBP issue or concern.

Criteria for Content 

Review literature regarding issues or concerns within your selected nurse practitioner specialty.  

Select a theory or theoretical model which is relevant to your nurse practitioner specialty and would offer a meaningful context for evidence-based practice surrounding the issue or concern which you identified.

1. In a PowerPoint Presentation, address the following.
   1. Introduction to the presentation
   2. Identify and describe a theory or theoretical model, and explain its relevance to your nurse practitioner specialty.
   3. Describe an issue or concern that is related to your nurse practitioner specialty, and explain its impact on health care outcomes
   4. Explain how the theory or theoretical model can be used as a framework to guide evidence-based practice to address the issue or concern, and discuss the unique insight or perspective offered through the application of this theory or theoretical model.

Submission Requirements 

1. Application: Use Microsoft PowerPoint to create the presentation. Submit as a .ppt or .pptx file.   
2. Length: The PowerPoint presentation must be 6-8 total slides (excluding title and reference slides).  
3. Speaker notes should be used and include in-text citations when applicable. Use the Notes Page view feature in PowerPoint to include speaker notes in the file.
4. A minimum of three (3) scholarly literature sources must be used.

The following are best practices in preparing this presentation:  

1. Review directions thoroughly.
2. Follow submission requirements.
3. Make sure all elements on the grading rubric are included.
4. Rules of grammar, spelling, word usage, and punctuation are followed and consistent with formal, scientific writing.
5. Review the Creating a Professional Presentation located in Course Resources.
6. Ideas and information that come from scholarly literature must be cited and referenced correctly.
7. A minimum of three (3) scholarly literature sources must be used. A minimum of 3 scholarly references are used. References should be published within the past 5 years. A primary source (original theory or writings from theorist) may be used, and primary sources may be older than 5 years. Textbooks are not considered scholarly resources.

In the media introduction to this module, it was suggested that you as a nurse have an important role in the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). With a focus on patient care and outcomes, nurses may not always see themselves as contributors to the development of new systems. However, as you may have observed in your own experience, the exclusion of nurse contributions when implementing systems can have dire consequences.

In this Discussion, you will consider the role you might play in systems development and the ramifications of not being an active participant in systems development.

To Prepare:

• Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle      (SDLC) as presented in the Resources.
• Reflect on your own healthcare organization and consider any steps your healthcare organization goes through when      purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system.
• Consider what a nurse might contribute to decisions      made at each stage of the SDLC when planning for new health information      technology.

By Day 3 of Week 9

Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. Provide specific examples of potential issues at each stage of the SDLC and explain how the inclusion of nurses may help address these issues. Then, explain whether you had any input in the selection and planning of new health information technology systems in your nursing practice or healthcare organization and explain the potential impacts of being included or not in the decision-making process. Be specific and provide examples.

Chapter Overview

Chapter 1 covers a lot of ground and sets the stage for the rest of the text. The premise of this text is that the health care industry is a big business and what medical office professionals do on the frontline matters. Students’ understanding of the laws and issues related to working in a medical office will help them protect patients, their employers, and themselves from unnecessary risks.

The scope of practice is a foundational issue discussed in Chapter 1. Because both state and federal law regulate the practice of medicine, it is necessary for students to be aware that there is an assortment of statutes and regulations that define the procedures they will be permitted to perform. This chapter also features discussion of the standard of care for medical professionals and laypersons and what it means to be a medical assistant.

Technical aspects of the law are useful for medical office professionals so they can understand the business aspects of working in a medical office. That is why this chapter includes discussion of the several types of legal entities, such as corporations, limited liability companies, and sole proprietorships, among others.

Another foundational issue is managed care organizations (MCOs), including HMOs, PPOs, and ACOs. It will be necessary for students to be familiar with the many facets of MCOs, including the focused objectives of reducing costs and delivering quality health care.

And, finally, this chapter features a discussion about telemedicine as an alternative health care delivery system that has become increasingly commonplace. The use of telemedicine is still in its infancy, but it has the potential to dramatically change the practice of medicine. Your students will learn that telemedicine is one more example of how health care has become big business.
